What are the Symptoms before the Failure of Diesel Gensets

May. 24, 2023

Common faults of the diesel generator set include bush burning, valve dropping, shaft breaking, cylinder sticking, cylinder tampering, flywheel cracking, etc. Different faults have certain precursors before they occur. Now, Dingbo Power will take you to know what symptoms are before the diesel gensets fails.

Signs before the failure of diesel generator sets

1. Precursors of burning tiles

During the operation of the diesel engine, the speed suddenly decreases, the load increases, the engine emits black smoke, the oil pressure drops, and a dry friction sound of chirping is emitted in the crankcase, which is a precursor to burning the tiles.

When encountering this situation, the machine should be stopped immediately, otherwise it will further aggravate the wear of the bearing shells, the surface of the journal will quickly expand, and the bearing shells and journal will quickly bond and lock, causing the engine to shut down.

2. Precursors of valve drop

The valve falling into the cylinder is generally caused by reasons such as a broken valve stem, a broken valve spring, a cracked valve spring seat, and the detachment of the valve lock clamp.

When the cylinder head emits a dangdang knocking sound (piston touching valve), a cha cha friction sound (piston touching valve), or other abnormal sounds, the unstable operation of the engine is often a precursor to the valve falling into the cylinder. At this time, the engine should be immediately stopped and stopped, otherwise it will damage the piston, cylinder head, and cylinder liner, and even bend the connecting rod, break the engine body, and break the crankshaft.

3. Precursors of shaft breakage

When a hidden crack occurs at the shoulder of the crankshaft journal of a diesel engine due to fatigue, the symptoms of the fault are not yet obvious. As the crack expands and intensifies, a dull knocking sound is emitted from the engine crankcase. When the speed changes, the knocking sound intensifies, and the engine emits black smoke. Soon, the knocking sound gradually increases, causing the diesel engine to shake, the crankshaft to fracture, and then the engine fires. Therefore, when there is an abnormal sound in the engine crankcase, it should be immediately stopped for inspection.

4. Precursors of sticking cylinder

Sticking to the cylinder usually occurs when the diesel engine is severely dehydrated. Before sticking to the cylinder, the engine runs weakly, and the water temperature gauge indicates more than 100 ℃. A few drops of cold water are dropped onto the body, causing a hissing sound and emitting white smoke. The water droplets quickly evaporate.

At this point, the engine should be allowed to run at low speed or idle to reduce the genset temperature. If the engine is immediately turned off, it may cause the piston and cylinder liner to stick to the cylinder.

5. Precursors of ramming cylinders

Tamping the cylinder is a highly destructive mechanical failure, which is mostly caused by the loosening of connecting rod bolts, except for the valve dropping causing the cylinder to be tampered with. After the connecting rod bolts are loosened or stretched, the clearance between the connecting rod bearings increases. At this time, a clicking sound can be heard in the crankcase, which increases from small to large. The connecting rod bolts completely fall off or break after the engine, and the connecting rod and bearing cover are thrown out, breaking the body and related parts.

6. Precursors of Flying Cars

Before the runaway, the diesel generator usually emits blue smoke, burns engine oil or has unstable speed. At the beginning, the speed of the diesel engine is not controlled by the throttle and rapidly increases until it exceeds the rated speed, causing the engine to emit a large amount of black or blue smoke.

At this point, if measures such as fuel cut-off, gas cut-off, and pressure reduction are not taken quickly to stop it, the engine speed will continue to rise and make a roaring sound. The exhaust pipe will be filled with thick smoke, and the speed will lose control, which will cause major accidents such as cylinder tampering.

7. Precursors of flywheel fragmentation

When hidden cracks appear on the flywheel, hitting it with a hammer will make a hoarse sound. When the engine is working, the flywheel will make a knocking sound. When the speed changes, the sound will increase and the engine will shake.

If the machine is not stopped for inspection at this time, it is easy to cause malignant accidents such as sudden fragmentation of the flywheel and flying debris that can harm people.
