Design of Noise Reduction Engineering for 500kW Generator Room

May. 24, 2023

What are design principles for noise reduction schemes in 500kW generator room?

1. When designing a noise reduction plan for 500kW generator room, the principle of not reducing the power of generator set should be ensured first. Full consideration should be given to the minimum inlet and outlet air volume standards required for normal operation of the generator set, as well as the fact that the exhaust back pressure cannot exceed the rated allowable back pressure value. The noise reduction and ventilation volume of the machine room are a pair of sharp contradictions, but in any case, the ventilation volume must be guaranteed first, otherwise the power output of the generator set will be seriously affected, the temperature of the generator set will rise higher, frequent failures will even shorten the service life of the diesel generator set.

2. In the design work, great attention must be paid to fire safety. The layout of noise reduction equipment in 500kW generator room should not affect the smooth flow of fire passages, and the selected noise reduction materials should be flame retardant materials.

3. In order to install more economically and operate more efficiently, 500kW generator set should be installed in a location where the exhaust pipe is as short as possible, and bends and blockages are as small as possible. Usually, the smoke exhaust pipe extends out of the external wall of the building and continues to go up along the external wall to the roof. A damping sleeve is placed at the wall hole, and an elastic joint is provided on the pipe to compensate for the length change of the smoke pipe due to thermal expansion. The exhaust muffler should be installed near the generator set to provide the best noise reduction effect, allowing the exhaust pipe to lead from the muffler to the outdoors, or can be installed on outdoor walls or roofs.

4. Due to the fact that exhaust noise is the part with the highest energy and component in the noise of the generator set, it is necessary to first reduce this noise. The design of exhaust silencers mainly considers three major indicators: noise reduction amount, frequency range of noise reduction (mainly the frequency range of peak noise reduction amount), and resistance loss. In addition, silencers should have good structural rigidity, prevent radiation and regeneration noise caused by excitation, have appropriate size, and be easy to install. In some cases (such as installation on smoke exhaust pipes), it is required that the internal structure be able to withstand high temperature and corrosion.

5. The design of noise reduction equipment structure and the selection of sound absorption and soundproofing materials should focus on reducing the noise in the frequency range of 500-3000Hz, as this frequency range is located in the most sensitive area of human hearing, and the noise source of generating set is mainly distributed around 500Hz. At the same time, great attention should be paid to and the possibility of resonance with the noise source should be firmly avoided.

6. The control of vibration and noise cannot be ignored, which can be started from basic design.

7. If there is a control room in the generator room, in order to ensure the environment for staff, attention should be paid to the vibration isolation and sound insulation of the control room and the machine room. In the design of the computer room structure, a 240mm thick partition wall should be used to separate the computer room from the operating room; Three layers of explosion-proof glass observation windows (with a glass thickness of 4-5mm) should be installed on the wall, and the spacing between the two outer layers of glass should be greater than 100mm. The upper end of the glass facing the computer room should preferably be slightly inclined to the floor surface of the computer room to better reflect noise and prevent fogging; The doors between the operation room and the generator room should be soundproof doors made of double-layer plywood.

8. The main factors that need to be considered when designing generator room include foundation bearing capacity, channel location, maintenance and operation space, vibration of the generator set, ventilation and heat dissipation, connection of exhaust pipes, insulation, and noise reduction; The size and location of the fuel tank, as well as the relevant national and local building, environmental regulations, and relevant regulations, will be comprehensively analyzed based on actual needs to determine the most economical noise reduction plan that meets practical needs.

9. Usually, the area of the exhaust outlet of 500kW generator set should be slightly larger than the effective area of the water tank. In order to reduce wind resistance, the distance between the exhaust outlet and the obstacle in front should be greater than 600-2000mm. The intake air volume of the generator set should be greater than the sum of the exhaust air volume and gas volume of the generator set. The generator set should not generate negative pressure in the room during operation.
