No one is willing to replace their diesel generators more frequently, which is the important reason for effective operation of standby and common diesel generators. It helps to extend the service life of generators and keep them in good operation every time they are needed.


Running the diesel generator incorrectly is not like running a car with expired oil change. Although the recommended distance may be exceeded before oil change, running the diesel generator without keeping up with maintenance or light load will inevitably shorten the service life of the generator.


If the maintenance and loading are improper, diesel generating set may lead to unscheduled shutdown, increase of regularly scheduled "life cycle" maintenance time, and increase of operating costs due to excessive fuel consumption, excessive wear and emissions.

What does the efficiency of diesel generator mean?


All generator sets, whether diesel or natural gas, regardless of application, load setting and operation, are designed to provide electricity in the most efficient way. Therefore, each generator set will have an optimal contact point between working load and fuel consumption. Since different engines consume fuel at different rates, and higher workloads almost always burn fuel most efficiently, diesel generator efficiency is usually achieved at the higher end of the load setting maintained by the generator design. For example, a 150 kilowatt diesel generator may have lower fuel consumption at 100 kilowatts instead of 60 kilowatts.


One of the most common problems of diesel engine running below its design load capacity for a long time is the phenomenon called "wet accumulation". When unburned fuel is exhausted due to low operating temperature, wet pile will occur. When unburned fuel is discharged from the combustion chamber, it begins to accumulate on the exhaust side of the engine, resulting in fuel injector fouling and carbon deposits on the exhaust valve, turbocharger and exhaust device.


In order to avoid wet stacking and other problems caused by light load operation of the generator, it is important to operate the generators within the optimal range as much as possible. The following are some generally accepted best practices for achieving diesel generator efficiency.


Generator load setting


Standby and Common Diesel Generators. These generators are typically optimized to operate at 50-80% of the total rated load.

Continuous Rated Diesel Generators. These generator sets are usually optimized to operate at 70-100% of the total rated load.


Running diesel generator under light load for a long time will affect the health of equipment. This may result in unplanned downtime, higher maintenance costs, higher fuel efficiency, and reduced overall generator life. The key to the efficiency of diesel generator is to keep it within the recommended range of its optimal load. And, of course, regular generator maintenance will help ensure the long life of your equipment.
