Damage to or failure to install an air filter on a diesel generator set used outdoors will result in serious consequences

Diesel generator sets can be used outdoors as backup power supply. It is extremely important for power emergency repair, outdoor engineering projects. However, in this blooming spring season, the air full of pollen and catkins. That is not only unfriendly to people who are prone to allergies, but also harmful to diesel generator sets. Especially when the air filter of the generator set is damaged or not installed, pollen and catkins can directly enter the generator. It will lead to the following consequences:

Increased fuel consumption

When impurities enter the piston ring grooves, they will aggravate wear between the piston rings and the piston. Meanwhile, carbon deposits will form in the ring grooves from impurities mixed with engine oil, causing the piston rings to stick or seize and lose their oil distribution and oil control functions, which results in increased oil consumption.

Engine scuffing

During the air compression process, airborne impurities will enter between the piston and cylinder wall, aggravating wear between the piston and cylinder wall. If the particle diameter is too large may cause unit cylinder scuffing failure.

Carbon deposits formation

Oil vapor, gum in fuel, combustion products, and other substances all search for the places where can adhere and form the carbon deposits. The impurities of air can serve as nucleation sites for carbon deposits to make sure the carbon deposits formation.

Low of power

When impurity particles flow at high speed between the valve and valve seat, they will scratch the sealing surface, reducing the valve's sealing performance. This causes a decline in the compression performance of the diesel generator, which in turn leads to a drop in its power output.

The role of the air filter is to filter out dust and impurities from the air, delivering clean air or a combustible air-fuel mixture to the combustion chamber, thereby reducing wear between the piston and cylinder liner, within the piston assembly, and between valve components. Therefore, diesel generators used outdoors must be equipped with an air cleaner. Meanwhile, the air filter element must be replaced regularly. Generally, Dingbo Power recommends replacing the air filter every 600~900 hours. The replacement interval can be shortened if the generator operates in harsh environments.
