How to Deal With Sudden Overheating of Cummins Diesel Generator During Operation

Jun. 29, 2022

We all know that Cummins diesel generator sets need a certain temperature range during operation. Overheating or undercooling is not conducive to the use of diesel generators. Overheating of the diesel engine will lead to lower inflation coefficient, abnormal combustion, reduced power, and fuel consumption. If the temperature of the diesel engine is too low, the mixture will be poorly formed, which will cause the unit to work rough, heat dissipation loss, power drop, fuel consumption increase, oil viscosity, and parts wear, etc., resulting in a reduction in the service life of the diesel generator set. So when the Cummins diesel generator suddenly overheats during operation, how should the user diagnose the cause and deal with it?

How to Deal With Sudden Overheating of Cummins Diesel Generator During Operation

Generator manufacturer Dingbo Power tells you, based on years of experience, that the overheating phenomenon of Cummins diesel generator sets generally occurs when the parts are suddenly damaged. The sudden damage to the parts will stop the pressure circulation of the coolant or cause a large amount of water leakage, resulting in sudden overheating. A malfunction in the temperature test system may also indicate that the unit is overheating. Generally speaking, the reasons for the sudden overheating of Cummins diesel generators during operation are as follows:

1. The temperature sensor fails, and the false water temperature is too high.

2. The water temperature gauge fails, and the false water temperature is too high.

3. The water pump is suddenly damaged and the coolant stops circulating.

4. The fan belt is broken or the pulley tensioning bracket is loose.

5. The fan belt is dropped or damaged.

6. The cooling system is seriously leaking.

7. The radiator is frozen and blocked.

Diagnosis and Treatment Method of Overheating of Cummins Diesel Generator Set

1.  First, observe whether there is a lot of water leakage outside the Cummins diesel generator. For example, if there is any leakage of water in the water discharge switch, water pipe joint, water tank, etc., if there is any leakage, it should be dealt with in time.

2. Observe whether the belt is broken. If the belt is broken, it should be replaced in time and the belt should be tightened.

3. Check whether the water temperature sensor and water temperature gauge are damaged, and replace if damaged.

4. Check whether the exhaust pipes of the diesel generator and the water tank are blocked and unblock them.

5. If there is no water leakage inside and outside the diesel generator, and the belt drive is normal, check the circulating pressure of the coolant, and check and repair it according to the "opening" fault.

6. Radiator icing generally occurs during cold starts in cold seasons. If the rotation speed is high after starting, and the fan is forced to draw air, the lower part of the radiator that has just been added with cold water freezes. After the temperature of the diesel generator rises, the cooling liquid cannot perform a large circulation, resulting in overheating or rapid boiling. At this time, measures should be taken to keep the radiator warm, reduce the air volume of the fan, or heat the frozen part of the radiator, so that the ice will dissolve quickly.

When overheating occurs during the operation of the Cummins diesel generator set, the user should remember not to stop immediately, and should keep the diesel generator running at idle speed, so that the temperature gradually decreases before stopping. During the cooling process, do not rush to open the radiator cover or When opening the cover of the expansion tank, attention should be paid to safety to prevent scalding caused by high-temperature water or steam spraying. If the coolant is consumed too much, appropriate soft water should be added in time.
