How to Effectively Dissipate Heat from the Radiator of Silent Diesel Generator

Sep. 16, 2023

The radiator of a diesel generator is an important component of the generator set, and its main function is to remove the heat generated by the diesel generator through heat dissipation, maintaining the normal operating temperature of the generator. A heat sink is usually composed of heat dissipation pipes, fins, and fans.

The working principle of a diesel generator radiator is to use coolant (usually water) to circulate in the heat dissipation pipe, transfer heat to the air through the heat dissipation fins, and exhaust the hot air through the fan. When a diesel generator is working, its engine will generate a large amount of heat. If it cannot dissipate heat in a timely manner, it will cause the generator to overheat and affect its normal operation. Therefore, the performance of the radiator directly affects the efficiency and reliability of the diesel generator.

During the operation of a silent diesel generator set, the coolant in the heat dissipation tank is usually very hot and under high pressure. Therefore, it is strictly prohibited to tidy the radiator or remove pipes when not cooling, let alone operate or open the fan protective cover while the fan is rotating.

How to Effectively Dissipate Heat from the Radiator of Silent Diesel Generator

Corrosion is the main cause of radiator failure. It is recommended to regularly check the pipeline joints to avoid leakage, and the water tank should be regularly filled with water to empty the air in the system. The cooling water tank should not be partially filled with water, as this usually accelerates the corrosion process. For non working generator sets, please evacuate or fill all water tanks. If conditions permit, use distilled water or natural soft water and add an appropriate amount of rust inhibitor.

Another issue is the cleanliness of the water tank. Water tank cleaning is divided into external cleaning and internal cleaning. This is an extremely important step that will directly affect the effectiveness of the radiator, thereby affecting the use of the entire silent diesel generator set.

In outdoor working generator sets, the gap between the radiators may be blocked by debris, insects, and other debris. Low pressure hot water (with appropriate detergent added) can be sprayed frequently, paying attention to spraying steam or water from the front of the radiator to the fan. When spraying, cover the diesel engine and AC generator with a cloth. If the sediment is difficult to remove, remove the radiator and soak it in hot alkaline water for about 20 minutes, then rinse with hot water.

The silent diesel generator set needs to undergo regular maintenance and inspection. The operator conducting the inspection must master the safety operation instructions before starting the maintenance work.
