35kW Weichai Genset Used for Cooling Tower at 3825m Altitude

Jun. 13, 2026

We recently received an inquiry for a 35 kW diesel generator set to be operated at an altitude of 3,825 meters. The client also provided a list of connected loads. This article analyzes the application conditions in detail.

Focusing on the power supply demand for cooling towers at the ultra-high altitude of 3,825 meters, and combining the load parameters including one 4 kW water pump, one 1.5 kW water pump and two 0.55 kW ventilation fans, this paper elaborates on the selection logic and high-altitude adaptation key points of the 35 kW Weichai diesel generator set. It addresses the operational risks of standard generator sets under ultra-high altitude conditions, so as to ensure the 24-hour continuous and stable operation of the cooling tower.

1. On-site Load Calculation

All loads of the cooling tower are steady loads without impact startup. The total rated power of the equipment is 6.6 kW. After accounting for line loss, equipment aging and operational fluctuation margin, the actual operating load reaches approximately 7.9 kW.

A 35 kW generator set has ample power margin for operation at plain areas. However, the low air pressure and oxygen deficiency at the ultra-high altitude of 3,825 meters will cause a significant performance drop of the unit. Standard plain-type units are not applicable, and customized selection for high-altitude environments is mandatory.

2. Core Impacts of the Ultra-high Altitude of 3,825 Meters

Generator sets are standardly calibrated for altitudes below 1,000 meters. Operating at 3,825 meters brings four major adverse impacts:

(1Power degradation: Insufficient oxygen leads to incomplete combustion, resulting in a power reduction of 25% to 30%. The unit is prone to carbon deposition, insufficient power and unexpected shutdowns.

(2Poor heat dissipation: Lower air density greatly reduces heat dissipation efficiency, causing the unit to shut down due to overheat protection.

(3)Degraded electrical performance: Low air pressure lowers insulation withstand voltage, which may trigger voltage fluctuation, corona discharge and accelerated insulation aging.

(4Reduced operational stability: Poor diesel atomization leads to difficult cold start at low temperatures and unstable idling, further affecting the stable operation of terminal equipment.

3. Selection Scheme for 35 kW Weichai Generator Set Adapted to 3,825 m Altitude

Given the low-load and high-altitude operating conditions, there is no need to upgrade to a higher-power unit. The 35 kW Weichai diesel generator can fully meet the requirements for stable power supply after customized high-altitude modifications. The detailed selection solution is as follows:

(1)Adopt turbocharged model for high altitude. Forced air intake compensates for insufficient air supply at high altitudes and effectively restrains power loss. The unit can deliver a continuous effective power of over 28 kW at 3,825 meters with sufficient power margin. Equipped with an electronic fuel injection system to optimize fuel atomization and combustion, and reduce carbon deposition.

(2)Reasonably control operating load. Based on the altitude derating factor, sufficient safety margin is reserved, and the unit load factor is controlled within 30% to keep it in the optimal operating range, avoiding carbon deposition under low load and shutdown caused by overload.

(3)Upgrade core components for high-altitude use. Install high-flow high-altitude air filters to guarantee adequate air intake; adopt an enlarged heat dissipation assembly to solve overheating issues; optimize generator insulation and electrical clearances to adapt to low air pressure conditions; equip cold start assist devices to improve startup reliability in low-temperature environments.

(4)Calibrate dedicated operating parameters. Core parameters including air intake, fuel injection, idling speed and voltage stabilization are factory-calibrated for 3,825 meters, ensuring stable output of voltage and frequency to support continuous equipment operation.

4. Key Maintenance Guidelines for High-altitude Operation

Specialized maintenance measures shall be implemented for high-altitude operation: Use low-pour-point diesel fuel for high altitudes to prevent wax precipitation; shorten the replacement cycle of three filters to ensure unobstructed air intake, fuel supply and lubrication; clean the heat dissipation system regularly and monitor electrical parameters routinely; avoid prolonged idling to minimize carbon deposition and extend the service life of the diesel generating set .

The main operational risks at the ultra-high altitude of 3,825 meters lie in power degradation, poor heat dissipation and inadequate electrical adaptation. The customized high-altitude 35 kW Weichai turbocharged diesel generator set, with structural upgrades and targeted parameter calibration, is perfectly suited for the low-load continuous operation of cooling towers. It eliminates potential operational hazards at high altitudes while controlling costs, and guarantees long-term safe and stable operation of the whole system.
