Methods for new diesel generator sets to smoothly complete the running-in period

A new diesel generator is just like a new pair of shoes. It cannot adapt well at first which may feel uncomfortable at first, but it will run smoothly after a period of running-in, as well as the diesel generator set. A diesel generator set also requires a running-in period, yet it is far more complicated than breaking in a new pair of shoes. The running-in period of diesel generator sets is about 60 hours. Only new gensets that have smoothly finished the running-in period can operate at full load. Then, what we should do to ensure new diesel generator sets finish their running-in period smoothly.

The methods are as follows:

1.       Do not allow new diesel generator sets to idle for long periods or operate under load.

2.       When connecting loads after startup, the engine must be sufficiently preheated in advance. Some generator models are equipped with an automatic preheating system and do not require manual preheating.

3.       After startup of a new unit, apply full load only when cooling water temperature rises to 60℃.

4.       The running-in period of diesel generator sets is generally about 60 hours. During this period, full load or overload operation is prohibited, and no running-in oil shall be used.

5.       Idle no-load operation of the engine for more than 5 minutes is forbidden.

6.       Operating the generator with low fuel level will cause excessive wear to generator parts due to insufficient fuel supply, and resulting in severe engine damage.

7.       Sudden load removal and emergency shutdown without idle cooling will result in insufficient oil film on component surfaces, accelerating wear during subsequent restart due to poor lubrication.

8.       After the diesel generator set is put into normal operation, it is required to usually monitor instrument readings and the overall operating status of the genset. Need to usually check the cooling system and the level of every parts fuel after running normally. If you find out any Regular inspections shall be carried out on the cooling system and oil levels of all lubricating parts. If abnormal levels or leakage are found, replenish fluids immediately and troubleshoot to resolve faults.

9.       During the running process, especially sudden load reduction, you should focus on the rotational speed raising suddenly due to the governor failure. Once exceeding the specified value, you must adopt the emergency methods, and find out the reasons.

10.       Short-term running-in shall be properly performed under actual operating conditions whenever cylinder liners, pistons, piston rings, connecting rod bearings and crankshafts are replaced.

The running in the running-in period is a necessary work for the new diesel generator set. In addition, the newly overhauled diesel generator sets also need to running-in to ensure their safe and stable operation. Users do not operate in a hurry, must allow the gensets to work normally after smoothly passing the running-in period.
