Six Matters Needing Attention in the Use of Diesel Generator Radiator

Aug. 13, 2021

Diesel generator set radiator is one of the indispensable important components in the unit configuration, and the use and maintenance of the unit radiator is also an important task that cannot be ignored. If the radiator in the cooling system of diesel generator set can't well reduce the heat generated during the operation of the unit, it will cause losses to various components, which will affect the output power of the diesel generator set, and even damage the diesel generator set. The following are 6 precautions that generator manufacturers- Dingbo Power compiled for you when using the diesel generator radiators, hoping to help users better maintain the radiators of the unit.

Six Matters Needing Attention in the Use of Diesel Generator Radiator

1. Don't add water after starting

Some users, in order to facilitate the start in winter, or because the water source is far away, often adopt the method of starting first and then adding water, which is very harmful. After the dry start of the diesel generator set, because there is no cooling water in the engine body, the parts of the engine of the set heat up rapidly, especially the temperature of the cylinder head and the water jacket outside the injector of the diesel engine is extremely high. If cooling water is added at this time, the cylinder head and the water jacket is easy to crack or deform due to sudden cooling. When the engine temperature is too high, the engine load should be removed first and then idling at a low speed. When the water temperature is normal, add cooling water.

2. Choose clean soft water

Soft water usually includes rain water, snow water, river water, etc. These waters contain less minerals and are suitable for use by unit engines. The content of minerals in well water, spring water and tap water is high. These minerals are easy to deposit on the radiator wall, water jacket and water channel wall when heated to form scale and rust, which will deteriorate the heat dissipation capacity of the unit and easily lead to the overheat of sets of engines. The added water must be clean. Impurities in the water will block the water channel and aggravate the wear of the pump impeller and other parts. If hard water is used, it must be softened in advance. The softening methods usually include heating and adding lye (usually caustic soda).

3.  Prevent burns when "boiling"

After the radiator of the unit is "boiled", do not blindly open the water tank cover to prevent burns. The correct approach is: idling for a while before turning off the generator, and unscrew the radiator cover after the temperature of the generator set drops and the pressure of the water tank drops. When unscrewing, cover the lid with a towel or car cloth to prevent hot water and steam from spraying on the face and body. Do not look down at the water tank with your head, and quickly withdraw your hands after unscrewing. When there is no heat or steam, remove the cover of the water tank to prevent scalding.

4. Heating water in winter

In the cold winter, diesel generators are difficult to start. If you add cold water before starting, it is easy to freeze during the water filling process or when the water cannot be started in time. , And even crack the radiator. Filling with hot water, on the one hand, can increase the temperature of the unit for easy starting; on the other hand, it can try to avoid the above freezing phenomenon.

5. Antifreeze should be of high quality

At present, the quality of antifreeze on the market is uneven, and many of them are shoddy. If the antifreeze does not contain preservatives, it will severely corrode engine cylinder heads, water jackets, radiators, water blocking rings, rubber parts and other components. At the same time, a large amount of scale will be generated, which will cause poor heat dissipation of the engine and cause overheating of the diesel generator set. Therefore, we must choose the products of the regular diesel generator set manufacturers.

6. Regularly change the water and clean the pipeline

It is not recommended to change the cooling water frequently, because the minerals have been precipitated after the cooling water was used for a period of time. Unless the water is very dirty and may block the pipeline and the radiator, do not replace it easily, because even if the newly replaced cooling water passes It is softened, but it still contains certain minerals. These minerals will be deposited on the water jacket and other places to form scale. The more frequently the water is replaced, the more minerals will be precipitated, and the thicker the scale will be. Therefore, it should be based on the actual situation. Regularly replace the cooling water. The cooling pipeline should be cleaned during replacement. The cleaning fluid can be prepared with caustic soda, kerosene and water. At the same time, maintain the drain switches, especially before the winter, replace the damaged switches in time, and do not replace them with bolts, wooden sticks, rags, etc.
