The Difference Between Single Cylinder and Multi Cylinder Diesel Engines

May. 17, 2023

A single cylinder diesel engine is a type of diesel engine that has only one cylinder when classified by the number of cylinders. It is the power system of small tractors, with a typical horsepower of around ten horsepower and a torque of around 60 Nm. Due to the long-term high-speed running friction of its various components, as the degree of wear continues to worsen, various faults will inevitably occur. If rapid and accurate diagnosis and troubleshooting can be achieved when faults occur, it plays a crucial role in improving the service life and operational efficiency of agricultural machinery. Diesel engines generally have the characteristic of low speed and good torque (long cylinder stroke), so they are not so dependent on speed, so the limit speed of a single cylinder diesel engine seems to be around 2000 revolutions.

The tractor mainly utilizes the characteristics of large single cylinder displacement, large reduction gear ratio, and long stroke, and the engine torque is amplified many times, which is enough torque.

Previously, single cylinder diesel engines used a mechanical governor, and when the accelerator was pressed, the fuel supply increased. But the load is too large, the torque of the diesel engine is not enough, the speed cannot be raised, and if the speed cannot be raised, the intake air is not enough. At this time, the excess oil cannot be completely burned, and can only be carbonized into particles and discharged, forming so-called black smoke.

The Difference Between Single Cylinder and Multi Cylinder Diesel Engines

If a single cylinder diesel engine starts emitting black smoke, it already has an excessive load, and in order to provide greater power, it can only desperately press the accelerator. For this diesel engine, it has already started to weaken and is about to be scrapped, and it won't have much effect. Due to the widespread use of mechanical governors in single cylinder diesel engines, when the accelerator is pressed, the fuel supply will increase, but the torque of the diesel engine cannot be increased, and the speed cannot be raised, resulting in a lack of intake air.

The diesel generator set is generally 4-cylinder I type, 6-cylinder I type, 12 cylinder and 18 cylinder. The greater the power, the more cylinders. The more cylinders there are, the heavier the genset, the larger the displacement, and of course, the higher the fuel consumption. Single cylinder diesel engines have two stroke and four stroke engines, with basically the same structure, but the main difference lies in the valve configuration. A multi cylinder engine can be seen as a combination of single cylinder engines arranged in different ways.
