What is the Effect of Overheating or Overcooling of 900kW Generator

Feb. 28, 2023

Today, let's briefly introduce the impact of overheating or overcooling of 900kW diesel generator.

The most important thing to note is that when the engine is running, the temperature in the cylinder reaches 1800-2000 ℃, and the instantaneous temperature reaches 3000 ℃. If the engine is not cooled in a timely and reasonable manner, it will lead to engine failure.

Overheating of 900kW generator will easily lead to early combustion of the engine, reduction of inflation volume and increase of friction loss. At the same time, it will also lead to reduction of viscosity of lubricating oil, oxidation deterioration, accelerated wear of parts, and overall deterioration of power, economy, reliability and durability of the engine. In serious cases, it may cause the moving parts to lose the normal clearance due to thermal expansion, causing the piston to move and pull the cylinder or get stuck and other malignant faults.

The data shows that when the coolant temperature rises from 90 ℃ to 120 ℃, the power decreases by about 5%. If the engine is too cold, a large amount of heat will be taken away by the coolant and air, the heat loss and mechanical loss will increase, the wear of parts will also increase, and the pre-ignition period of ignition will be too long, the engine will work rough, and the idle speed will be poor, making it difficult to start.

What is the Effect of Overheating or Overcooling of 900kW Generator

The data shows that when the coolant temperature is from 90. When C decreases to 40 ℃, the fuel consumption increases by about 30% and the power decreases by about 10%; When the temperature is from 80. When C decreases to 30 ℃, the wear iron will increase by about 5 times. Therefore, the engine must maintain normal operating temperature during operation.

The overheating or overcooling of the 900kW generator set is reflected by the temperature of the cooling medium. Under normal conditions, the temperature of the engine is 80~90 ℃, higher than this value is overheating, lower than this value is subcooling. Practice has proved that whether it is overheated or undercooled, it will reduce the service performance and shorten the service life of Volvo generator sets.

How to prevent overheat of 900kW diesel generator set during operation?

(1) Ensure sufficient circulating cooling water

First of all, the circulating cooling water in the water tank of the diesel generator set should be kept in sufficient condition, so that the diesel generator set can dissipate heat to the maximum extent during operation.

The normal operating temperature of 900kW diesel generator set itself should not exceed 50 ℃. Once the temperature exceeds 50 ℃, the diesel generator set with self-protection function will automatically alarm and shut down. Therefore, it is a wise choice to assemble a self-starting diesel generator.

(2) Correct use of closed cooling system

When the engine is working, the coolant vapor enters the expansion tank and flows back to the radiator after cooling, which can prevent a large amount of evaporation loss of the coolant and improve the boiling point temperature of the coolant. The cooling system shall use high-quality coolant with anti-corrosion, anti-boiling, antifreezing and waterproof scale, and must be sealed during use to achieve the effect.

(3) Keep the outside and inside of the cooling system clean

When the radiator is stained with dirt, oil or the radiator fin is deformed due to collision, the passage of wind will be affected, and the radiator's heat dissipation effect will become poor, resulting in high coolant temperature. Therefore, the radiator should be cleaned or repaired in time.

In addition, when there is scale, sand or oil in the cooling system, it will affect the heat transfer of the coolant. Adding inferior coolant or water will increase the scale in the cooling system, and the heat transfer capacity of the scale is only one tenth of that of the metal, so the cooling effect will become worse. Therefore, the cooling system should be filled with high-quality coolant.

(4) Maintain sufficient coolant

When the engine is cold, the coolant level should be between the expansion tank and the mark. If the level is lower than the mark of the expansion tank, it should be added in time. Note that the coolant in the expansion tank cannot be filled, and there should be room for expansion.
