Why do Diesel Generators Emit Black Smoke

Jun. 15, 2023

The exhaust pipe of a diesel engine should normally emit colorless gas. If the exhaust pipe emits black smoke, it indicates that the diesel engine is malfunctioning and must be promptly eliminated. The exhaust emits black smoke, which not only reduces diesel engine power and increases diesel consumption, but also easily forms carbon deposits and shortens engine service life. So what causes the black smoke of diesel generator?

1.Diesel generator set low speed is set too low. Because the fuel injection speed is low, prone to poor atomization. The lower the idle speed adjustment, the more serious black smoke emission. This is a common characteristic of the diesel generator itself.

2.The air intake is not enough. Air filter blockage or poor; exhaust brake valve stuck can not return or can not be fully open, affecting the exhaust gas discharge and fresh air into; valve clearance is too large valve opening is not enough; operating at high altitude, due to thin air to make the mixture too thick, resulting in incomplete combustion.

3.Low compression in the cylinder. Poor compression in the cylinder, compression pressure is reduced. This may be the piston and cylinder liner wear too large, piston ring wear too large or open in the same direction, resulting in cylinder leakage. It may also be the valve seal is not tight air leakage. Poor compression in the cylinder, compression end temperature is low, while air leakage to reduce the air, diesel can not be completely combustion, and black smoke. The main reasons for poor cylinder compression are: (1) Cylinder liner, piston ring wear too much, piston ring installation is incorrect or loss of elasticity caused by cylinder leakage; (2) Valve clearance is too small, easy to be top open when hot, or valve ablation, carbon caused by poor cylinder seal; (3) Cylinder head and body, injectors and cylinder head joint surface leakage; (4) Valve serious sag, piston and piston pin, piston pin and connecting rod small head, connecting rod Large head and connecting rod journal clearance is too large, so that the combustion chamber volume increases, compression ratio decreases.

Why do Diesel Generators Emit Black Smoke

4.Bad fuel atomization. Injector wear or jamming; injector nozzle blockage; injector drip phenomenon after spraying; injector injection pressure is insufficient.

5.The amount of fuel injection is too large. Insufficient injector opening pressure; injection pump outlet valve wear; governor wear, resulting in lower centrifugal force, and the balance of the governor spring; improper selection of fuel injection volume.

6.Too much carbon accumulation. Poor fuel quality, does not meet the requirements; muffler clogging.

7.There is lubricating oil in the combustion chamber. Piston, cylinder wear so that the mating cylinder gap exceeds the limit; valve guide wear or damage to the guide rubber ring, so that the oil into the combustion chamber; piston oil ring wear or broken, accelerating the pumping action of the piston ring. The amount of lubricating oil in the oil sump is too much, so that the crankshaft and connecting rod throw too much oil to the cylinder wall.
