Coolant Information for Cooling System of Cummins Generator

40% to 60% of all engine faults of Cummins generator are directly or indirectly caused by the cooling system. For example, the piston ring is worn, the oil consumption is high, the intake and exhaust valves are burned, and the bearings are corroded.

Following Fleetguard's recommended simple diesel coolant maintenance method will reduce your generator downtime by 40% to 60%.


The first step: check cooling system

Solve system leaks;

Check pumps, fans, belts, pulleys, water pipes and stuck water pipes;

Check the radiator and its cover;

Make sure the thermostat is working properly;

Repair all kinds of faults.

The second step: system preparation

Clean Cummins engine cooling system. Contaminated cooling systems do not transfer heat efficiently, and 1.6 mm of scale has the same thermal insulation effect as 75 mm of steel on the same area.

Clean the cooling system with a safe organic cleaner such as Fleetguard RESTORE or RESTORE PLUS. A clean system does not require cleaning.

The third step: choose coolant

The function of coolant is heat dissipation protective metal.

Major light duty (small to medium horsepower) engine manufacturers also require 30% alcohol-based coolants. Alcohol-based coolants can lower the surface tension of water, make the coolant thinner, and increase the penetration (into metal pores) of coolant additives. Coolant Specifications

Water: 30%-40%

Alcohol: 40%-60%

Additives: Such as Fleetguard DCA4, which complies with TMC RP 329. Fleetguard's coolant additive DCA reduces fatal damage to the engine by forming a protective film on the cylinder liner wall. Working principle: A dense and hard oxide protective film is formed on the metal surface. Bubble bursting will occur on the protective film without damaging metal surfaces such as the outer wall of the cylinder liner. Any damage to the metal protective film will be repaired immediately. To maintain the effectiveness of the protective film, a certain DCA concentration must be maintained.

The fourth step: install coolant filter

Select the appropriate coolant filter according to the type of coolant selected. Why use a coolant filter? Various published data show the immediate benefits of using a coolant filter to filter out impurities from the coolant, reducing wear, liner wear, clogging and scale formation.

The function of the coolant filter:

1. Release coolant additive DCA.

2. Filter solid impurity particles.

3. Among the used filters, the test proves that 40% of the filters contain medium pollution impurities.

4. More than 10% of the filters contain impurities of serious pollution level.

5. Directly reduce wear and blockage.

6. Reduce phosphorus to ensure heat dissipation.

7. Extend coolant life.

8. Reduce pump leakage.

Tested water pump seals on 11,000 engines, half with coolant filters and half without coolant filters, and found that the engine water pump seals without filters leaked more than those with filters 3 times more leaks from the engine water pump seals. It is recommended to replace the coolant every 2 years or 4500 hours. Use the maintenance water filter when changing the oil, and replace the pre-installed water filter.


The fifth step: filling full coolant

Fill up the cooling system with the coolant of choice. There are 2 options for coolant: concentrate or diluted coolant. Remember to bring coolant with you to add it.

The sixth step: keep cleaning

Fill up the coolant of choice, do not add water. Replace the coolant filter at the recommended replacement interval: COMPLEAT 50™ every 16000 - 20000 km or 250 hours. PGXL Coolant™ every 250000 km, 4000 hours or 1 year.

Finally, cooling system maintenance summary

1. Coolant consists of coolant, pure water and cooling additive DCA.

2. The cooling system must be pre-charged with an appropriate amount of DCA.

3. Coolant should be used all year round.

4. Change the water filter regularly and change the coolant every two years.

5. Periodically check the DCA concentration with the test kit.

6. The DCA and water filter will provide good protection for the cooling system to prevent cavitation, scale, metal corrosion, stress corrosion, etc.

7. A well-maintained cooling system will save a lot of maintenance costs.
