1. Improper use of fuel  

Obviously, when you use any type of diesel engine, using other fuels (such as gasoline) can completely ruin the machine.  Not only is the type of fuel important, but the quality of the fuel chosen can have a significant impact on the performance of the machine.  This is especially true for diesel engines.  When not in use, a high-quality fuel source will prevent buildup and condensation in the fuel system.  This ensures that the generator is turned on when needed.  Using old fuel can also cause major problems, even if it is of high quality to start with.  Keeping fuel fresh and flowing is the key to good generator performance.  

2, avoid maintenance  

Delay maintenance of any type of engine.  If you hear something that doesn't sound normal when you start the generator, then think (and hope) that it might go away.  But not making repairs is one of the biggest mistakes a diesel generator owner can make.  When you see signs of damage, you need to get the generator to an experienced mechanic as soon as possible who will know how to fix the underlying problem.  Don't try to save money by not repairing.  When you have to replace the generator all at once, it can end up costing more.  

3. Forget to clean filters

4. Don't let it warm up before use  

If you know before you start using a diesel engine that you have to let the machine warm up a bit before you can actually use it.  The same is true of diesel generators, which are one of the most important generator maintenance tools.  The warm-up period helps the machine use it efficiently through and reduces condensation buildup to push the fuel.  It doesn't take much time, but it can make a big difference to the generator's performance, especially on those cold nights.  

5. Let it sit for a long time  

The most important way to warm up a diesel generator is to turn it on regularly.  Long periods of time can cause many problems.  Using a diesel generator is often a backup source for more permanent power, such as during a power outage during a storm.  If you can't use the generator when you need it, it will be a waste of money because it hasn't been turned on recently.  When fuel is left for too long, it can become old or even sticky.  If this is the case, it will not flow easily through the system and therefore will not start.  However, this is easy to fix.  Just make sure to turn the generator on for a while every few months.  After that, you can go as long as you need it.  

6. Lack of routine checks  

Like everything in life, diesel generators need to be checked regularly and checked for potential problems and repairs.  This can be done in a number of ways, either by checking it yourself or by handing the machine over to a professional mechanic.  No matter which method you choose, this maintenance procedure is essential to extend the life of the generator.  When you miss these checks, you are most likely missing minor issues that could escalate into major issues in the future if not addressed appropriately and quickly.  

7. Try to handle maintenance yourself  

Although they are much simpler than other types of diesel engines, diesel generators are still a complex piece of machinery.  That means it should be handed over to a mechanic for any major repairs.  This is especially true if you know you will rely on a generator in an emergency.  Trained professional mechanics will be able to carry out all necessary repairs while maintaining the work they do.  Having technicians working on your machine to get things done the first time is a huge benefit.
