Part two: 38 Common Questions of Diesel Generating Set

Feb. 21, 2022

14. What happens when the diesel generator is overloaded for a long time?

Diesel generators usually cannot be overloaded during operation, but can withstand short-term overload. If the unit is overloaded for a long time (exceeding the rated power), some conditions may occur.

Including: overheating of cooling system, overheating of generator winding, low oil pressure caused by the decomposition of lubricating oil concentration, and shortening the service life of the unit.

15. What happens if the unit load is too low?

If the machine operates under low load for a long time, the water temperature will not rise to the normal temperature, the viscosity of the oil will be large and the friction will become large. The oil that should have burned in the cylinder forms a paint finish on the cylinder pad due to heating. If the low load continues, blue smoke may appear, or the surface paint of the cylinder gasket needs to be removed, or the cylinder gasket needs to be replaced.

16. What should I pay attention to when installing the exhaust system?

The generator diesel has its standard configuration, such as industrial muffler, flexible exhaust connection and elbow. The user can install the exhaust system with the supporting facilities provided. However, the following points should be noted during installation:

Cummins generator

1. Confirm that the back pressure is lower than the set maximum value (usually, it should not be lower than 5kpa).

2. Fix the exhaust system to avoid transverse and longitudinal pressure.

3. Leave space for contraction and expansion.

4. Leave space for vibration.

5. Reduce exhaust noise.

17. Is it feasible to add cooling water immediately when the temperature transition of diesel engine is too high?

Absolutely not. Wait until the engine cools naturally to room temperature before adding cooling water. If the cooling water is suddenly added when the diesel engine is short of water and overheated, it will cause cracks in the cylinder head, cylinder liner and cylinder block due to drastic changes in cold and heat, causing serious damage to the engine.

18. ATS automatic switching operation steps:

1. Module manual operation mode:

After turning on the power key, press the "manual" key of the module to start directly. When the unit starts successfully and operates normally, at the same time, the automation module also enters the self inspection state, which will automatically enter the speed-up state. After the speed-up is successful, the unit will enter the automatic closing and grid connection according to the display of the module.

2. Full automatic operation mode:

Set the module in the "automatic" position, and the unit enters the quasi start state. In the automatic state, the mains power state can be automatically detected and judged for a long time through the external switch signal. Once the mains power fails or loses power, it will enter the automatic start state immediately. When the mains power calls, it will automatically switch off, slow down and shut down. When the mains supply returns to normal, the unit will automatically trip and withdraw from the network after 3S confirmation of the system. After a delay of 3 minutes, it will automatically stop and automatically enter the preparation state for the next automatic start.

19. What should I do if the tightness of diesel generator cylinder becomes low and it is difficult to start?

When the engine is cold started, especially in winter, because there is little oil on the piston ring and cylinder wall and the sealing effect is poor, the phenomenon of repeated start-up and failure of ignition operation will occur. Diesel generator sets sometimes seriously affect the sealing performance of the cylinder due to heavy cylinder wear, making it more difficult to start. In this regard, the fuel injector can be removed and 30 ~ 40ml oil can be added to each cylinder to enhance the sealing performance of the cylinder and improve the pressure during compression.

20. Self protection function of diesel generators.

Various sensors are installed on the diesel engine and alternator, such as water temperature sensor, oil pressure sensor, etc. through these sensors, the operating status of the diesel engine can be intuitively displayed to the operator. Moreover, with these sensors, an upper limit can be set. When the limit value is reached or exceeded, the control system will give an alarm in advance, At this time, if the operator does not take measures, the control system will automatically stop the unit, and the diesel generator set takes this way to protect itself.

The sensor plays the role of receiving and feeding back various information. It is the control system of diesel generator set that really displays these data and performs the protection function.
