How to maintain a Cummins diesel generator set?

To ensure the longevity and efficiency of your Cummins diesel generator, preventive maintenance is necessary. Follow the schedule in the operator’s manual for routine periodic engine and generator maintenance. Generally, preventive generator maintenance consists of general inspection, lubrication service, cooling system service, fuel system service, servicing and testing starting batteries and regular engine exercise.

General inspection

When the generator set is running, you need to perform routine visual inspections. Inspect the entire exhaust system for leaks at all connections, welds, gaskets and joints. Inspect the fuel system for any leaks, cracks or abrasions. Check the terminals on the starting batteries for clean and tight connections. Pay attention to the fluid levels, oil pressure and coolant temperatures frequently.

Lubrication service

Follow the engine manufacturer's recommendations to change the oil and oil filter regularly. It’s important to use the proper oil type as proper lubrication is essential for the smooth operation of the generator's engine. Often check the engine oil level and top it up when necessary.

Cooling system

Check the coolant level during shutdown periods regularly and add coolant until the level is about 3/4-inch below the radiator cap lower sealing surface if necessary. In addition, inspect the exterior of the radiator for obstructions and remove all dirt or foreign material with a soft brush or cloth. Be careful and make sure you do not damage the fins.

Fuel system

Diesel fuel has a limited shelf-life, which is prone to contamination and corrosion within a period of one year. So it’s necessary to use up stored fuel over the course of a year with regular generator set exercise before it degrades. All fuel filters must be drained and cleaned at regular intervals as water vapors accumulate and condense on the fuel tank. Also inspect the charge-air piping and hoses daily for leaks, holes, cracks or loose connections. Inspect the charge-air cooler for dirt and debris that may be blocking the fins. Check for cracks, holes or other damage.

Battery maintenance

Batteries are an essential part of the diesel generator set. Without a battery, your Cummins diesel generator won’t be able to start and provide the electricity you need at critical times. Thus, check the battery terminals for any signs of corrosion and clean them regularly. Ensure that the battery is securely fastened and the connections are tight. Test the battery's voltage periodically and replace it if needed to avoid unexpected failures.

Regular engine exercise

regular exercising keeps engine parts lubricated, prevents oxidation of electrical contacts, uses up fuel before it deteriorates, and, in general, helps provide reliable engine starting. Exercise the generator set at least once a month for a minimum of 30 minutes loaded to no less than one-third of the nameplate rating.
