Several tips on operating diesel generators

Generally speaking, the lifespan of a diesel generator depends on how the user uses and maintains the generator. Improper operation can cause damage to the unit and lead to many generator problems. The following are some tips on how to operate your diesel generator properly.

Before adding engine oil or diesel fuel to a generator, ensure that the generator is turned off and any connected loads are disconnected. Check the oil level with the oil dipstick, make sure the oil level is between the minimum and maximum marks. Add or remove oil depending on the oil level conditions if necessary.

After starting the generator set, check whether the electrical instruments or the controller are normal, and whether there is any abnormal noise. Check if the diesel generator voltage and frequency meet the required values. Carefully observe the working status lights and oil pressure on the generator set and check if the water temperature is normal.

Before shutting down the generator, remember to remove all loads first. Reduce the speed to idle and finally stop the generator. If the genset has been operated for a long time, don’t stop it immediately after removing the loads. Please let the diesel generator run without load for a few minutes to allow it to have enough cooling time.

If the generator will be left not used for a long time, the battery power cords should be disconnected, and the generator should be started once within a period of time.
