Can A Diesel Generator Set Run On Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a renewable diesel fuel made from oil crops, aquatic plant oils, animal fats, food waste oil and other raw materials by transesterification process.  As early as many years ago, the research of using biodiesel to replace petrochemical diesel has been carried out internationally, and has made considerable progress.  So can diesel generators run on biodiesel?  

Not long ago, Shanghai Municipal Food Safety Commission office and other departments reached a cooperation with the Engine Research Center to use biodiesel produced from kitchen waste grease (commonly known as gutter oil) for auxiliary energy in diesel generators.  

The study has actually been going on since 2005.  Study found that 10% of biodiesel mixed 90% petroleum diesel blended fuel, can be in diesel generator engine under the condition of use, don't do any changes for diesel generator engine performance, fuel economy and little influence durability indicators, but biodiesel oxygen, nox emissions increased,  But "the change is almost invisible."  

The mixture, which contains gutter oil, has been tested on three diesel generators and 50 diesel taxis in Shanghai for more than 1,000 hours. No significant effects on diesel generators have been found so far.  However, some experts said that the performance of biodiesel is not stable enough, low added value, can not be fully used in diesel generators.
