Layout and Installation of Exhaust Pipes for Diesel Generator Sets

Sep. 18, 2023

1. Layout specifications of diesel generator set

(1) It must be connected to the exhaust outlet of diesel generator set through corrugated pipes to absorb thermal expansion, displacement, and vibration.

(2) When the muffler is placed in the computer room, it can be supported from the ground based on its size and weight.

(3) It is recommended to install corrugated pipes in the section where the smoke pipe changes direction to offset the thermal expansion of the pipeline during the operation of the diesel generator set.

(4) The internal bending radius of a 90 ° elbow should be three times the pipe diameter.

(5) The first stage silencer should be located as close as possible to diesel generator set.

(6) When the pipeline is long, it is recommended to install a rear muffler at the end.

(7) The smoke exhaust terminal outlet cannot directly face flammable substances or buildings.

(8) The exhaust outlet of diesel generator set shall not bear heavy pressure, and all rigid pipelines shall be supported and fixed with the help of buildings or steel structures.

(9) To prevent condensate from flowing back into diesel generator set, the flat exhaust pipe should have a slope and the low end should be away from the engine; Drainage outlets should be installed in the muffler and any other parts of the pipeline where condensation water droplets flow, such as at the vertical turning of the smoke pipe.

(10) When smoke pipes pass through flammable roofs, walls, or partitions, insulation sleeves and wall cladding should be installed.

(11) If conditions permit, arrange the majority of smoke pipes outside the computer room as much as possible to reduce radiation heat; All indoor smoke pipes should be equipped with insulation sheaths. If the installation conditions are limited and it is necessary to place the muffler and other pipelines indoors, a high-density insulation material with a thickness of 50mm and an aluminum sheath should be used to wrap the entire pipeline for insulation.

(12) When fixing the pipeline support, thermal expansion should be allowed to occur.

(13) The terminal of the smoke pipe should be able to avoid rainwater dripping. The smoke pipe can be extended horizontally, and the outlet can be repaired or rainproof caps can be installed.

2. Precautions for smoke exhaust pipe installation

(1) Try to make as few turns as possible.

(2) The thermal expansion of a general pipe is 1.33mm/(m. ℃), so when the temperature rises from 35 ℃ to 500 ℃, a 10m long pipe will extend by about 50mm. Therefore, when installing, it is necessary to consider using a corrugated pipe or roller exhaust support system.

(3) When installing straight pipes, tilt them slightly downwards.

(4) Wrap the exhaust pipe and muffler with insulation material to avoid temperature rise in the diesel generator room.

(5) Do not allow the weight of the exhaust pipe to be applied to the engine, reducing the excessive vibration fatigue stress of the exhaust components. Allow the exhaust components to move relative to each other. For example, thermal expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes, plastic deformation of any structural component, or reaction torque generated by assembling a diesel generator on a spring type shock absorber.

(6) If the exhaust hose needs insulation, it must be ensured that the insulation material does not hinder the free expansion and contraction of the exhaust hose.

(7) If the exhaust pipe is too long, a limit device must be used so that it can only extend towards the free end.

(8) After welding, all exhaust pipes must be cleaned of the welding slag inside before being put back into installation and use.

(9) It is not allowed for multiple diesel generator sets to share a smoke exhaust pipe, as the water vapor in the smoke of the running diesel generator set will enter the non running diesel generator set, ultimately causing engine damage due to condensation.

As is well known, if diesel generator set needs to be started, it will inevitably generate exhaust. At present, diesel generator sets start automatically in the state of power outage, greatly improving people's quality of life. In this era of environmental protection, most diesel generator sets are stored indoors. In the process of designing a diesel generator set room, smoke exhaust from the room is a key issue that we need to focus on solving, The above content provides a detailed explanation of the technical requirements, precautions, and installation specifications for the exhaust system of diesel generators.

In addition, it is necessary to remind users that if it is a diesel engine used in the laboratory, its exhaust system should be improved. Due to the high energy consumption and low utilization rate of the exhaust system in diesel engine test rooms, the individual exhaust systems in the diesel engine test rooms can be changed to centralized exhaust systems, and frequency conversion technology and PLC control methods can be introduced. With the negative pressure of the exhaust main pipe as the control parameter, a constant pressure exhaust system in the test room can be formed, enabling it to make corresponding adjustments in real-time based on the changes in exhaust volume caused by the changes in the number of working hours in the test room, Not only has it improved the efficiency of equipment use, but it has also achieved good energy-saving effects.
