Working Principle of Fuel System of Diesel Generators

Jul. 25, 2023

1. Fuel system

The generator set fuel system should ensure a continuous supply of clean fuel to the engine. Most installations have a daily fuel tank, a storage fuel tank, an fuel pump and related systems.

The installation of fixed generator set split fuel tank must comply with local specifications.

Smoking, sparks or flames are not allowed near the fuel. Volatile fuel and engine oil can explode.

1.1 Daily fuel tank

The daily fuel tank directly supplies oil to the generator set, so it should also be placed in the generator set room. The steel underframe of the small generator is equipped with a steel or plastic daily fuel tank, which is equipped with fuel pipes and connected to diesel generator. Such base botom tank can provide fuel for diesel generator to operate at full load for a minimum of 8 hours. Or if equipped with a large engine bottom fuel tank, it can run for about 24 hours.

Warning

Do not let the bottom fuel tank be under pressure, as this situation may occur due to blockage of the fuel tank vent valve or connection of the overflow pipe to the large fuel tank.

1.2 Large oil storage tanks

In order to extend the service life of the generator set, it is necessary to have a separate large fuel storage tank, especially for backup generator sets that do not have regular fuel supply, due to emergency start-up, the fuel supply channel cannot be connected.

Large fuel storage tanks should generally be placed outdoors in a convenient place for refueling, and should be easy to clean and inspect. However, they should not be exposed to areas that may freeze in winter, as the fuel flow rate will slow down due to increased viscosity. The fuel storage tank can be placed on the ground or underground.

Large fuel storage tanks must have vent holes to release the air pressure generated during tank filling or due to volatilization and expansion. It is also necessary to prevent the generation of vacuum due to fuel consumption. The bottom of the fuel tank should be circular and placed with a 2 degree tilt to facilitate the accumulation of water and sediment. A drain valve should be installed at a low point to discharge water and sediment to a fixed location. Buried fuel tanks should be regularly drained of this water.

The height difference between a large fuel storage tank and a daily fuel tank is important. Because the ultimate vertical distance of electric Pumpjack is 4m. Therefore, the bottom of a large fuel storage tank should not be more than 4 meters below the horizontal height of the daily fuel tank.

1.3 diesel fuel circuit

Fuel pipes can be made of any pipe material that does not undergo chemical reactions with the fuel, such as steel pipes or flexible hoses that can adapt to any factor.

The fuel system cannot use lead-plated water pipes or lead-plated water pipe devices.

The fuel delivery and return pipeline should be at least the same size as the opening on the engine, while the overflow pipeline should be enlarged by one size. If the pipeline is long or the surrounding temperature is low, these oil pipes should be enlarged to ensure smooth flow. The connection with diesel generator shall be made with hose.

To prevent damage, breakage, and oil leakage caused by machine vibration.

2. Fire prevention measures

When designing and installing generator sets, the following measures should be considered simultaneously:

◆ The room should be equipped with fire exits, so that in the event of a fire, personnel can safely evacuate.

Equipped with BC level or ABC level fire extinguishers, or fire extinguishing systems.

◆ The fuse of temperature control can close the gravity fire damper and connect it to the Diesel generator. The fuel shutoff system is used to cut off the fuel supply.

The oil extraction point of the delivery fuel pipe should be no less than 50mm above the bottom of the fuel tank.

Clean fuel is an important factor affecting the lifespan and reliability of the engine, and the first level fuel filter should be installed between the transfer pump and the engine fuel filter. The valve for drainage and sediment should be located at the opposite end of the delivery pump.
