What are the filters used in diesel generator?

Diesel generator sets have three filters: oil filter, fuel filter and air filter. Each filter is essential to the normal operation of diesel generators.

Oil filter is responsible for providing clean supply of oil to different parts of the engine for smooth running and reducing the effects of wear and tear. It can filter impurities in the air and prevent them from circulating in your engine.

Fuel filter is used for obstruct external substance entering the engine, keep your diesel generator clean. Clean diesel fuel can ensure the normal operation of the fuel system and improve the fuel efficiency and stability of the engine.

A generator air filter can prevent harmful particles from reaching critical engine components. The filtration prevents premature wear of the parts and thus ensures the longevity of the engine.

How often should you change the filters on diesel generators?

Generally, the replacement cycles of generator filters vary depending on the usage of your generator, environmental conditions and the quality of the filters. You should follow the manufacturer's recommendations and the actual situations to change the filters.

Diesel generators usually require an oil filter replacement after 200~500 hours of use or longer. For new generators, typically the owner’s manual will recommend changing the oil after the first 25 or 50 hours of operation. After the run-in period, if the working conditions of your generator set are particularly bad, such as high temperature and high pollution environment, and the oil filter is blocked, it should be replaced in advance.

The air filter often needs to be replaced every 1000 hours. However, for generators working in harsh environments, the replacement cycle of the air filter should be reduced to no more than 800 hours. Generally, the change frequency of air filter depends on your actual running hours of the diesel generator sets.

The fuel filter is recommended to be replaced every 250 hours of use. The new generator’s fuel  filters should be replaced within 50 hours of use. The replacement cycle also depends on the quality of the diesel. If you use poor quality diesel fuel, the replacement cycle should be shortened.
