How Many Types of Generator Silencers

Sep. 05, 2021

As far as generators are concerned, silencers can reduce noise and exhaust emissions during combustion just as engines used in automotive and construction applications.

1. There are three basic design generator silencers:

Sound absorption silencer. The internal structure is composed of glass fiber or insulating glass. After the exhaust passes through the insulation, its noise will be reduced. This method is used to reduce high frequency sound waves.

Combined silencer. Combining the reaction silencer with the absorption silencer, the absorption material is installed in the interior design of the reaction silencer, thus reducing all frequency designs.

Reactive silencer. The internal structure consists of three cavities connected by tubes. The exhaust noise between the exhaust chambers rebounds, reducing the output noise to reduce the medium and low frequency noise.

2. Cylindrical silencer

Cylindrical muffler is one of the earliest developed shapes. They can be built into all three basic designs and can be used internally and externally. Silencers can be installed horizontally or vertically according to the requirements of various applications. It is said that this is one of the most economical silencers.

3. Thin silencer

The muffler can have rectangular, oval, circular and other shapes. The selected shape depends on the available space. They often use generators in sound attenuation enclosures. Disinfection equipment must comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations.

When the generator works in combustible environment, the exhaust system must be modified to ensure that the sparks generated in the combustion process will not be discharged into the atmosphere. Mars brake silencers are usually cylindrical and use an improved reactor design. In this way, the carbon spark circulates in the muffler and falls into the collection box. During maintenance, the collection box must be cleaned.

The exhaust pipe temperature is up to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit. This gas is often discharged into the atmosphere. The hot air silencer is used to use the heat in the exhaust gas and then enter the atmosphere. This heat source can be applied to any system requiring external heat source. Please see the exhaust characteristics and temperature curve.

4.Exhaust control silencer

There are many kinds of combustible gases. Some gases are very harmful, others are harmless. The National Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforces waste gas regulations to reduce harmful gas emissions.

The State Environmental Protection Administration strictly controls the emission of generators that provide main power. The current relevant regulations require the use of catalytic converters. The basic converter is designed from a cellular grid and is installed directly in the exhaust system behind the exhaust pipe. In this position, the exhaust gas can reach the maximum temperature required for normal operation. Many new silencers use a combination of converters and silencers.

The relevant provisions also relate to the content of particulate matter in exhaust gas. The soot content of exhaust gas can be reduced by using particulate filter. The inner layer of the filter screen is made of ceramic material. The exhaust gas is collected by materials and soot. Lean burn engines can also use additives to further reduce harmful gas emissions.

Noise level of silencer

The sound intensity emitted by the exhaust pipe is measured in decibels. Decibel is a unit of measure used to represent the ratio of one physical attribute to another logarithmic scale. Decibel value is a measurement method similar to the response of human ear to sound.

Early silencers were divided into four basic grades. Industrial, commercial, residential and hospital levels are considered to be the industrial standards for the production of silencers. At the same time, the sound reduction effects of different manufacturers are also different. The Generation Systems Association (EGSA) has developed a set of rating guidelines to provide a unified muffler rating for all manufacturers belonging to the association. It has become a manufacturing industry standard.

Common levels are:

Industrial grade - reduce noise by 15 to 20 dB.

Housing level - reduce exhaust noise by 20 to 25 dB.

Critical level - exhaust noise reduction of 25-32 dB.

Super critical value - reduce noise by 30-38 dB.

Medical level - reduce exhaust noise by 35-42 dB.

Additional level of hospital - reduce exhaust noise by 35-50 dB.

Limit level - reduce noise by 40-55 dB.

Over limit level - reduce noise by 45-60 dB.

It should be noted that not every silencer and style can work at all levels. Various manufacturers produce various models, and their production cost and physical properties of silencers determine the level of availability.
