Standard for Use of Fuel for Diesel Generator Set at Low Temperature

It is now the hot summer season. Although the beginning of autumn has passed, it does not affect the continued hot weather. But even under this hot summer, although most areas are very hot, some places are still very cold. For example, Genhe City, which is located in Hulun Buir City, Inner Mongolia, is the coldest city in China. The annual average temperature is -5.3℃, the extreme ultra-low temperature is -58℃, and the annual freezing period is 210 days. It is known as China's cold pole. In these low-temperature environments for many years, what are the standards for the use of diesel generator set fuel? Dingbo power will show you about it.

(2) It is stipulated in the national published diesel standard that the cold filter point of No. 0 diesel is 4°C (the lowest temperature at which diesel can pass through the filter screen), and its freezing point is not higher than 0°C (the temperature at which diesel condenses). The condensation point of No. 10 diesel is not higher than -10°C, and its cold filter point is -5°C. The condensation point of No. 20 diesel is not higher than 20°C, and its cold filter point is -14°C. No matter what grade of diesel oil, with the continuous reduction of the temperature, it will first pass through the cold filter point and then through the condensation point.

(3) Like gasoline, diesel also has different grades. The difference is that the gasoline grade is determined by the octane number, and the diesel grade is divided based on the freezing point of diesel. For example, the freezing point of No. 0 diesel oil is 0°C, so the selection of different grades of diesel oil should be mainly determined by the temperature at the time of use. At present, the diesel used in China is divided into six grades according to the freezing point: No. 5 diesel, No. 0 diesel, - No. 10 diesel, - No. 20 diesel, - No. 35 diesel and - No. 50 diesel. As the temperature of wax deposition is 6°C~7°C higher than the freezing point, generally No. 5 diesel is suitable for use when the temperature is above 8 °C; No. 0 diesel is suitable for use when the temperature is between 8 °C and 4 °C- No. 10 diesel is suitable for use when the temperature is between 4°C and - 5°C, - No. 20 diesel is suitable for use when the temperature is between -5°C and -14°C, -35 # diesel is suitable for use when the temperature is between -14°C and -29°C, - 50 # diesel is suitable for use when the temperature is between -29°C and -44°C or below.

(4) The free flow of diesel depends on its temperature, pour point and cloud point. The phenomenon of fuel thickening in low temperature environment is called waxing. The temperature at which wax is formed varies with the fuel base material. If the operating temperature of the diesel generator is lower than the fuel cloud point, the wax crystal flowing with the fuel will block the filter screen, filter or the sharp bend and joint of the fuel pipe. Pour point inhibitor can only reduce the size of wax crystals in fuel, but can not change the temperature at which wax crystals are formed. The only known method to prevent the formation of wax crystals in the fuel is to use low cloud point fuel or keep the fuel temperature above the cloud point. This can be solved by using fuel oil heater, and the diesel generator can be applied under operating or non operating conditions.

Pour point: refers to the minimum temperature at which the cooled sample can flow under the specified test conditions.

Freezing point: refers to the maximum temperature of the oil when the oil surface of the cooled sample is no longer moving under the specified test conditions. Pour point is one of the parameters reflecting the low-temperature fluidity of oil. The lower the pour point, the better the low-temperature fluidity of oil.

Cloud point: the temperature at which liquid samples such as oil and varnish are cooled to the beginning of turbidity under standard conditions is their cloud point. Turbidity is due to the precipitation of water or solids from the sample. The lower the cloud point of fuel oil, lubricating oil, etc., the less water or solid paraffin it contains.

(5) When the fuel heater is used, the selected specification must keep the fuel temperature above the cloud point, but lower than the temperature point that causes the deterioration of the lubricating quality of the fuel. If a fuel heater or filter is selected for a designated diesel generator, the resistance to the fuel system measured at the inlet of the fuel pump shall not exceed 100mmhg.
