What is oil sludge in electric generator?

The sludge produced in different parts of the engine can be divided into low-temperature sludge and high-temperature sludge.

Low temperature sludge is produced by the combined action of gas channeling (containing unburned fuel and water) and engine oil, that is, when the engine is operating at low temperature, the water and fuel in the crankcase are not completely evaporated, thus emulsified, resulting in sludge.

The high-temperature sludge causes the thickening of the engine oil when the engine operates at high temperature, that is, the viscosity of the engine oil changes, and the sludge will be formed over time. The sludge will become hard and fragile after being heated at high temperature, which will greatly increase the wear of the engine. This is called black sludge.

What are the hazards of sludge?

1. A large amount of sludge adhering to the inner wall of the crankcase will reduce the heat dissipation capacity of the cylinder block, resulting in excessive oil temperature and reduced engine power.

2. There is a large amount of sludge in the oil passage inside the engine, which will increase the flow resistance of the oil and reduce the oil flow, thus affecting the lubricating effect of the oil.

3.Too much oil sludge will block the engine oil passage, resulting in a lack of lubrication between engine components, and in serious cases, it will lead to tile burning, axle seizure and other phenomena.

How the sludge is formed?

The oxidation of engine oil under the catalysis of high temperature environment, air, fuel vapor and metal will form paint films and carbon deposits, which are the rudiments of sludge. First of all, this is an unavoidable normal phenomenon.

This is because the current engine oil contains detergents and dispersants to remove carbon deposits. They can clean the metal surface, disperse dirt, and keep the engine clean. When changing the engine oil, these dirt will be discharged together with the old engine oil, which is why the discharged engine oil will show a darker color.

If the detergent and dispersant dosage in the engine oil are not enough or not at all, as the engine continues to work at high and low temperatures, combined with the mixed catalysis of water vapor and fuel vapor, sludge will accumulate. Over time, more and more sludge will adhere to the metal surface.
