Atypical Operating Conditions for Generator Set Control Switch Circuit Breakers

Nov. 22, 2021

Circuit breaker refers to the switch installation that can break the gate, bear and disconnect the current under the basis of conventional circuit, and can break the gate, bear and disconnect the current under the basis of abnormal circuit in a certain period of time. The circuit breaker is divided into high voltage and low voltage 2 kinds according to its application scope. The difference between high voltage and low voltage boundary is not clear. It is usually high voltage electrical equipment above 3kV.

Atypical Operating Conditions for Generator Set Control Switch Circuit Breakers

Based on the durability of the engine in a diesel generator set, most maintenance is essentially protective in nature.  Protective diesel engine maintenance includes the following practical operations: general inspection, lubrication service, cooling system service, fuel system service, repair and test start-up battery, scheduled engine.  If the generator set will be affected by some or all of these extreme practical operating conditions, it is best to consult the engine manufacturer for an appropriate maintenance plan.

As a kind of emergency power supply response, to the use of stable performance of diesel generator set, especially boot operation, load stable practical operation, automatic adjustment and other functional modules, and its usual maintenance directly involved.  Therefore, the unit can not be underestimated in accordance with national standards to carry out peacetime maintenance.

When selecting circuit breakers, try to keep the end user's position in mind. Each circuit breaker is basically different, with some more suitable for harsher conditions. When determining which circuit breaker to use, keep the following conditions in mind:

High ambient temperature:If standard thermomagnetic circuit breakers are used at temperatures in excess of 104°F, the breaker should be derated or recalibrated to accommodate capacity as much as possible. For many years, all circuit breakers were calibrated for 77°F, meaning that all circuit breakers above this temperature were derated as much as possible. In fact, most shells are around 104°F. A special class of circuit breakers is common for these types of conditions.

In the mid-1960s, technical standards changed, and all standard circuit breakers took 104°F into account on time. Corrosion and moisture: In constant humidity conditions, it is recommended to carry out a special moisture-proof solution for circuit breakers. This type of solution is beneficial to resist molds and/or fungi that will corrode the equipment. In high humidity conditions, the most appropriate response is to use space heaters in the housing. If it will, remove the circuit breaker from the corroded area.  If this is divorced from reality, it can be applied to the corrosion resistant circuit breaker manufactured by professional production.

High impact probability: if the circuit breaker is to be installed in an area with high probability of mechanical impact, special impact protection devices should be installed. The shockproof device consists of an inertial counterweight located on the central bar to lock the trip bar under normal vibration conditions. The weight shall be installed so as not to prevent the thermal or magnetic release from operating under overload or short circuit conditions. The U.S. Navy is the largest end user of the high seismic hammer required for all warships.

Altitude: At altitudes above 6,000 feet, the current-carrying capacity, voltage and breaking capacity of circuit breakers must be derated. At high altitudes, the thinner air does not transfer heat away from current-carrying parts and from the denser air at lower altitudes. In addition to overheating, the thin air prevents building dielectric charges fast enough to withstand the same voltage levels that occur at normal atmospheric pressure. Altitude problems can also lower the ratings of most generators and other power generation equipment in use. It is best to talk to a power generation professional before buying.
