Generator Charging System Voltage is Below Normal Operating Range

Fault code 597- Charging system voltage low, data valid but below normal operating range (moderate severity level)

Yellow.

4. Fault cause

The battery monitoring characteristics have detected low battery voltage.

5. Fault results

The yellow fault indicator light remains on until the battery voltage is normal.

(1) Check the battery voltage.

(2) Check the charging performance of the generator

See fault code 442.

(3) Check for an open in the unswitched battery power circuit

1) Disconnect the keyswitch, disconnect the power harness plug from the ECM, and disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery.

2) Measure the resistance between the battery power contact pin (+) of the ECM plug and the positive terminal (+) of the battery. The resistance should be less than 10 Ω. If the resistance is not less than 10 Ω, repair or replace the battery harness.

(4) Check for short circuits

1) Disconnect the keyswitch, disconnect the power harness plug from the ECM, and disconnect the battery positive (cable).

2) Measure the resistance between the ECM battery power supply (+) pin and the ECM battery power supply (-) pin, which should be greater than 100k Ω. If it is not greater than 100k Ω, repair or replace the OEM power harness.

(5) Check the power harness for short circuits

1) Disconnect the key switch, disconnect the OEM power harness plug from the ECM, and disconnect the battery positive (+) cable.

2) Measure the resistance between the+contact of the ECM battery power supply and all other contacts in the ECM plug. It should be greater than 10000k Ω. If it is not greater than 100k Ω, repair or replace the OEM power harness.

(6) Clear fault codes

1) Connect all components, close the key switch, and connect the service software.

2) Start the engine, run for 10 minutes, and use service software to clear current and non current fault codes.
