How to Maintain Diesel Generator Sets

Dec. 16, 2021

Routine maintenance is the main component of generator reliability.  Precautions must be taken, such as battery checks and cooling system checks, to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the generator so that you do not find your diesel generator operating with problems.  There are many key points to optimize the reliability of diesel generators.  Your generator will remain operating at maximum efficiency by completing the following types of preventive maintenance detailed by Dingbo Power:

Lubrication service: The oil level of the installation engine shall always be as close to full as possible.  Check the engine oil level when the equipment is shut down to ensure accurate readings and make sure the oil is replenished and changed as needed.  Regular oil filter changes also help to keep the generator engine well lubricated.

Cooling system service: the cooling system shall check the coolant level at specified intervals during shutdown.  After allowing the engine to cool, remove the radiator cover and, if necessary, add coolant until the level is about 3/4 below the lower sealing surface of the radiator cover.  Heavy-duty diesel engines require a balanced coolant mixture of water, antifreeze, and coolant additives.  Use the coolant solution recommended by the engine manufacturer.  Check for obstructions outside the radiator and remove any dirt or foreign matter with a soft brush or cloth.  Be careful not to damage the heat sink.  If available, clean the radiator with low pressure compressed air or water flowing in the opposite direction from the normal flow.

Check coolant heater operation by making sure hot coolant is being drained from the outlet hose.

Fuel system service: Because diesel is a fuel that deteriorates and pollutes over time, it is important to store only fuel that can be used within a year.  The maintenance of the fuel system should include the discharge of the fuel filter and the collection of water vapor and sediment in the tank.

Also, check the fuel supply line, return pipe, filter and filter accessories for cracks or wear while the generator set is in operation.  Make sure the lines are smooth and free of any friction that could lead to an eventual rupture.  Replacing or repairing any leaking line wiring eliminates wear and tear immediately.

Battery check: One of the most common generator problems has to do with battery failure.  When testing the battery, make sure it is fully charged and watch out for any corrosive leaks.  Be sure to gently wipe the dirt and debris from the battery surface to prevent damage.  Replace the battery when it can no longer charge normally.

Exhaust system: Check the entire exhaust system, including exhaust manifold, muffler and exhaust pipe, while the generator set is in operation.  Check all connections, welds, gaskets and joints and ensure that the exhaust pipe has not damaged the area around over-heating.  Repair any immediate leaks.

Preventive maintenance is not only the key to ensure the reliability of generators, but also the key to reduce costs.  By fixing damage as soon as it is discovered, preventing serious problems can keep expensive repairs to a minimum.
