Is the Cooling System Different for Different Diesel Generator

Aug. 24, 2021

There are many kinds of diesel generators, from being used as home backup power supply of small portable generator to large-scale industrial equipment used as main power at remote oil drilling sites. Regardless of the size and function of the generator, they all have one thing in common-they can all generate heat.

Why does generator need to be cooled?

Most generators have multiple conductors, and when current passes through the conductors, all conductors generate heat. This heat accumulates rapidly in the system and must be properly removed to reduce the risk of damage.

If the heat cannot be properly discharged from the system, the coil will be quickly damaged. Many problems, including gaps and balance problems can arise. However, the heat can be greatly reduced by various cooling systems. If the generator keeps cooling down, it is possible to minimize the risk of damage to the generator itself. Finally, this will reduce frustration and avoid repair work.

Is the Cooling System Different for Different Diesel Generator

Air cooling system

After understanding the value of unit cooling, I further understood the working principle of the best air cooling system. There are mainly two cooling methods for air-cooled systems.

First, the open ventilation system. However, the air in the atmosphere is used to expel the air. In this way, the air can be released back to the atmosphere. Inhale the air and push it back around.

Second, close the system. As the name says, a closed system can maintain air circulation. Can circulate air. If so, the air will cool, which in turn cools the generator.

Air cooling systems have some limitations, including the risk of overheating. However, most air-cooled systems are limited to small standby and portable generators, each of which can generate up to 22 kilowatts of power.

Liquid cooling system

Liquid cooling systems, sometimes called water cooling systems, are an alternative. There are many types of liquid cooling systems. Some use oil, some use coolant. Hydrogen is another cooling element.

The entire liquid cooling system is equipped with a water pump, which transports the coolant around the engine through multiple hoses. The heat of the generator is naturally transferred to the coolant, cooling the device. This system is especially suitable for large generators. In order to cool the generator, they need additional load-bearing parts. It does increase costs, but they are the most common choice in commercial and industrial applications.

One of the important options is the hydrogen cooling system. They are also used in large generators. The hydrogen used has high thermal conductivity. In this way, these systems can dissipate heat faster. Therefore, they are suitable for large systems that cannot be effectively cooled by other cooling media.

Effectiveness.

Its size and purpose determine that the motor plays an important role in choosing a suitable cooling scheme. In larger systems, usually more than 22 kilowatts of power, the air-cooled system is completely inefficient. They cannot absorb enough heat from the system, causing the system to quickly overheat. Liquid cooling systems are the most commonly used in commercial and industrial fields.

The air-cooled system is most suitable for portable generators and household generators. There is less electricity, less demand, and less heat. The air cooling system works well here and the cost is low.

Cost comparison

When it comes to cost, price is size and power. Liquid cooling systems are more complex and have more components. They use a complex design and use the radiator (and other components) to work effectively. Overall, these systems are stronger, more durable, and more robust. For liquid cooling systems, hydrogen coolers are often the most reliable and effective, but also the most expensive part.

The air-cooled system has low efficiency for large generators. But for those looking for simple systems for small generators, these devices are generally affordable options.

Maintenance

Maintenance should be an important consideration when choosing a cooling system. The simpler the equipment, the simpler the maintenance procedures. Since the design of the air cooling system is very simple, it is easier to maintain. They will not cause too much confusion in the cleaning process, and most people can do it.

The hydraulic cooling system is more complicated. Most systems require special tools to clean. In addition, these systems also require frequent maintenance.

Noise level

Another important consideration is the noise level. Depending on the environment in which it is used, one style may be better than another. The air-cooled system is noisier than the liquid cooling system. The sound comes from the air blown through the engine. In addition, most liquid cooling systems run very quietly. Although all cooling systems and generators will produce a lot of noise. Some liquid cooling systems are very quiet because they can reduce noise to a certain extent.
