Is the Overheating of Diesel Generator Related to Rainshed?

As the main or standby power supply, diesel generator sets are favored by users, such as hospitals, factories, mines, etc. However, no matter what the machine is, some faults may occur during use. Today, Dingbo Power will analyze whether the overheating of diesel generator set is related to rainshed?  

This is a real case of a customer in our company. This customer purchased 2 sets of 400kVA silent diesel generator sets with us in 2023, and the generator sets had been used for 2 years and 1 month by 21th November 2025, and the customer fed back the overheating of the generator set to our company in November 2025. In order to better understand the local environment where the generator set is used, the customer provided us with videos and pictures when the generator set s running. We saw the historical data record of the controller, including high temperature alarm shutdown and engine temperature of 99 ℃. This temperature is already a critical value and the temperature is really high.

Our technicians communicated with the customer and the customer again provided us with the picture of the generator set installation environment (see the following picture). It can be seen from the picture that the customer built a rainshed above the generator set. We find that the distance between the rainshed and the generator set is too low, which makes the exhaust gas discharged from the generator set directly blow to the rainshed, and then the exhaust gas returns to the generator set, thus causing the air around the generator set to become hot, and the air intake system of the generator set will suck the hot air into the engine, at this time, the generator set cannot get enough fresh air cooling, thus causing the high temperature alarm shutdown of the engine. In addition, the local ambient temperature in Madagascar sometimes can reach 60 ° C to 70 ° C. If the coolant in the radiator is not sufficient, the high temperature alarm and shutdown will be triggered.

The above conjecture has been confirmed. We recommend the customer to remove the rainshed and restart the diesel generator set for observation. On November 28, 2025, the customer removed the canopy and restarted generating set. The customer fed back that there was no high temperature alarm shutdown problem, and the generator set operated normally. The following picture shows the rainshed removed:

The soundproof diesel generator set of Dingbo can be directly installed outdoors without any rainshed. Our soundproof canopy is made of galvanized steel plate, which is not easy to rust. The silent canopy surface is painted with plastic spraying process, which is not easy to paint off. So there is no need to install a rainshed to shield the sun and rain. If it is really necessary to install a canopy, the canopy shall be at least 2 m to 3 m above the generator set.  

If you have also encountered high temperature alarm shutdown of diesel generator set, it may also be related to the following reasons, you can check and eliminate one by one:

Automatic protection shutdown due to too high temperature of cooling water caused by too high operating environment temperature of generator unit in summer belongs to normal protection shutdown or fault-free shutdown. However, some are fault alarm shutdown, as follows:

1. Overload operation of the unit and excessive oil supply.

2. The water tank of diesel generator set leaks or the water volume is insufficient, the water tank water channel is too thick or the cooling fin is too much greasy.

3. The water pump is worn, the pump water is insufficient, the opening angle of the thermostat is not enough, and there is clamping phenomenon.

4. Excessive wear of cylinder liner and local water seepage.

5. The cylinder gasket is damaged, the water channel is connected with the cylinder, and the temperature of the cooling water rises sharply.

6. Excessive wear of fan belt and insufficient pressure.

7. False alarm and shutdown caused by damaged water temperature sensor.
