Damage of Mixed Oil Used in Diesel Generator Set

May. 16, 2023

It is important to know that engine oil is an indispensable part of diesel generator set. It is a lubricant to ensure the normal operation of the engine. At the same time, it can take away the heat generated by the engine during operation, clean the fine metal debris generated after wear, and also has the functions of sealing, vibration reduction, rust prevention, etc. When some users use diesel generator sets, they are not strict enough in the use of engine oil. It is very dangerous to mix old and new engine oil or different brands and viscosities.

Mixing new and old engine oil: When new and old engine oil are mixed, due to the large amount of oxidizing substances in the old engine oil, it will accelerate the oxidation of the new engine oil, thereby reducing the service life and performance of the new engine oil.

Mixing of gasoline engine oil and diesel engine oil: Although both gasoline and diesel engine oil are formulated from base oil and additives, there are essential differences in the specific formula and proportion. For example, diesel engine oil contains more additive components, and diesel engine oil with the same viscosity level also has a higher viscosity than gasoline engine oil. Mixing two types of lubricating oils may cause engine overheating, wear during low-temperature starting, and other faults.

Mixing of different brands of engine oil: Engine oil is mainly composed of a combination of base oil, viscosity index improver, and additives. Different brands of oil may have differences in base oil or additive composition, even if the type and viscosity level are the same.

Mixed use of different brands of engine oil will have the following effects on 750KVA diesel generator:

Oil turbidity: Regardless of whether the brand is the same or not, oil of different models may experience turbidity after mixing. Because each type of engine oil has different chemical additives, mixing may result in chemical reactions, reducing lubrication efficiency, and may also produce acid-base compounds to accelerate damage to engine parts.

Abnormal exhaust: Mixing different brands of oil may also cause abnormal exhaust smoke, such as black or blue smoke. Because the oil may be diluted after mixing, it is easy for the oil to enter the cylinder and burn, causing blue smoke from the exhaust pipe. Or the mixing of engine oil may cause the cylinder to seal poorly, resulting in black smoke from the exhaust.

Oil sludge generation: Mixing different engine oils can easily produce oil sludge, which can reduce the heat dissipation effect of the engine oil, leading to high engine temperatures and easily causing malfunctions. It can also block filters, oil ducts, etc., causing poor circulation and engine lubrication.

Accelerated wear: when oil is mixed, its anti-wear performance may change greatly, which may damage the oil film and easily cause wear of the piston and cylinder wall, and in serious cases, the piston ring will break.

The diesel generator set oil shall not be mixed as much as possible, because the additives of different models are different, which may cause chemical reactions and various faults and damages. If there is a shortage of oil during operation and it is necessary to mix oil, it is recommended to choose oil of the same type and viscosity as much as possible.

The above is about the damage that mixed oil will cause to the diesel generator set. If you don't know anything about it, please come to our website, and we will have professionals to explain it to you.
